Research Program and Project Description
high intensity ultrasound is a technology that has the potential to improve the quality of dairy products, as we believe that ultrasound may improve treatment, the microstructure of the crystallized proteins, lipids and networks.
The project consists of two systems corresponds to a lipid-protein and food systems, anhydrous milk fat and whey protein concentrate, respectively. The research will focus on raising awareness of the effect of treatment with high intensity ultrasound on the crystallization of skim milk and whey formation of a protein network by studying the microstructure and macroscopic properties. It is hollow using oscillatory rheology, texture analysis, microscopy, confocal laser scanning fluorescence analysis and analysis by pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance to perform.

Qualifications and specific skills
The candidates for doctoral degrees appropriate control (or degree in the very near future - Documentation for the final documents and test date must accompany the application) or equivalent.

The doctoral project should have a general training in food science, molecular biology or physical chemistry or equivalent qualifications. A study abroad is expected to graduation.

The department of Computer Science and Engineering provides a strong, international, and dynamic research environment with about 70 faculty and 70 PhD students from about 30 countries. For more information, see www.chalmers.se/cse/EN/.

The Distributed Computing and Systems research group conducts research with high-impact internationally on the design and analysis of lock- and wait-free data structures for shared memory systems, run-time systems, and parallel algorithms and data structures in general for highly parallel, heterogeneous, many-core systems. The group is running a set of national and international projects in the area and participates on a recently started European Project in Performance Portability and Programmability for Heterogeneous Many-core Architectures.

Job description

The research focuses on shared memory parallel algorithms, data structures and their programming. The project’s context is on fine-grain synchronization and memory consistency in parallel programming, aiming also at balancing the trade-off between the cost of synchronization and ease of programming. This involves work on shared data structures/primitives that allow concurrent data access and exhibit scalability on different types of shared-memory/multi-core architectures, as well as on deriving methodologies for developing such components.

The employment is expected to start early autumn 2011 (small deviations are negotiable). As a Ph.D. student you are employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements (starting salary at present: approx. 25000SEK before taxes). A maximum of 20% of your time will be devoted to other duties at the department, mainly teaching. The remaining time will be devoted to your own courses and research within the project and you are expected to obtain a Ph.D. within a maximum of 5 years.

Required qualifications

Applicants shall have a Master’s Degree or corresponding (Sw. civilingenjörsexamen) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or in a related discipline. As for all PhD studies, a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills, orally as well as literally, are needed. Further, since the research work normally involves developing and testing analytical techniques, good programming skills are important. A successful candidate should have a profound interest in data structures and algorithms for shared memory and many-core architectures.

A PhD position is available at ETH Zurich under the supervision of Dr. Jan Engelstädter. The aim of the project is to develop mathematical models for the evolution of genetic exchange in bacteria, with the overarching goal of gaining a better understanding of why sex and recombination are so abundant in nature. An important applied aspect in this project concerns the evolution of resistance to antibacterial compounds in pathogens, which is a major problem in public health. Starting date of the position is January 1st 2011, but this is to some degree negotiable. The position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation for three years.

The successful applicant will be based at the main campus of the ETH Zurich close to the town center. She or he will belong to both the Molecular Microbial Ecology group, led by Prof. Martin Ackermann, and to the Theoretical Biology Group, led by Prof. Sebastian Bonhoeffer. This environment provides ample opportunities for collaborations with other theoreticians as well as experimental biologists. The groups are very international and the working language is English. (Some knowledge of German may be helpful for living in Zurich but is not necessary.) Zurich is a beautiful city that offers many cultural and outdoor activities and a high general quality of life.

Applicants should have a keen interest in evolutionary questions and be highly motivated to address such questions with mathematical models. The INVEST Drug Abuse Research Fellowship combines postdoctoral research training in the United States with professional development activities and grant-writing guidance to form a unique program for drug abuse scientists. Fellows may conduct their research in any aspect of the biomedical or behavioral science of drug abuse and addiction. Previous Fellows have conducted research in all aspects of drug abuse and addiction, from social science to basic science, including epidemiology, prevention, treatment, and preclinical and clinical sciences. Fellows and their mentors are encouraged to develop jointly and seek funding for a collaborative research project to be conducted in the Fellow's home country. Fellows and their U.S. mentors are part of a network of international scientists who exchange information and collaborate on drug abuse research nationally, regionally, and globally.

What Does the Fellowship Include?

The 12-month fellowship provides –

•Rigorous postdoctoral research training with a NIDA grantee at a U.S. institution.
•Professional development activities that help you establish personal relationships with NIDA grantees and NIDA officials who are willing to continue working with you after you return home.

The Institute of Marine Research has a two-year post doctoral research position available to work with modeling genetic interactions between wild and farmed fish. The position will be connected to the Population Genetics and Ecology research group in Bergen.

The position will be linked to the modeling work-package in the Strategic Institute Project “INTERACT”, financed by the Norwegian research council. Building upon published data, current models and state-of the art, the work-package aims to advance models to quantify the interactions between wild and farmed fishes, for both Atlantic cod and Atlantic salmon. The ultimate aim is to identify “break points” for tolerance of genetic introgression in wild populations.

Together with members of the research team, the appointee will have responsibility for establishing, testing and publishing new models that shed light onto the consequences of farmed escapees and tolerable levels of introgression in wild populations. This will be achieved through developing models describing dynamics of wild salmon and cod populations that are interacting and potentially interbreeding with conspecific fish of aquaculture origin. Important parameters to be tested include numbers of escapees, fitness of hybrids, and behavioural interactions between wild and cultured fish.

Eligible candidates

We wish to appoint a highly motivated person with a PhD in modeling, statistical genetics, population ecology or related discipline. The appointee will need to be able to document experience of programming and use of models to study dynamical systems in biology. Previous experience with modelling of fish population dynamics is not necessary but is considered advantageous.

The Institute emphasises personal qualities such as good communication and cooperative skills, the ability to work independently and as part of an active research team. A record of publishing in this field will be considered and advantage.

The British Council is delighted to announce the launch of the British Council IELTS Scholarship for Indian students planning to study at universities overseas. In line with its mission to promote the global sharing of knowledge and ideas, the British Council will select eight students from India, each of whom will receive an award of Rs.3,00,000 towards the cost of tuition fees.

Application procedure:

* Take an IELTS test with the British Council and receive your scores.

* Download and complete the application form and go through the FAQs.

* Last date for completed applications is 31 July 2010. You must complete selection Task.

* Forty applicants will be shortlisted. We will notify you via email by 6 August 2010 whether you have been short-listed. Short-listed applicants will be required to make a ten minute presentation on a topic that will be communicated, followed by a brief interview.

* We must receive from the short-listed applicants a letter of acceptance from the university you plan to attend prior to 20 August 2010.

* Failure to submit your letter of acceptance by the 20 August deadline will result in your immediate removal from the short-list of applicants.

* We will notify all short-listed applicants of the final result by email by 31 August 2010.

Essential eligibility criteria are that applicants must:

* Be a citizen of India.
* Begin full time postgraduate study outside India in 2010.
* Attend a higher education institution that accepts IELTS as part of its admission requirements.
* Have a valid IELTS score, with a minimum band score average 6.5.

Program Description

Materials with magnetic properties based on molecular species or polymers had attracted the attention of the research community in recent years. These materials can be obtained by constructing charge transfer salts combining molecules and metallic centres. The predicted properties of such molecular-based magnetic materials, particularly in combination with other physical properties associated with molecules and polymers, may open the opportunity for their use in future generations of electronic, magnetic, and/or photonic devices.

Currently, the necessary step to develop such devices is to control the synthesis and the organization of this kind of organic materials on surfaces. Such structure depends on a number of competing interactions between the functional molecular groups, the interaction with the substrate and the adsorbed metal centres. The research will involve using surface science methods to grow and characterize the supramolecular networks in ultra-high vacuum (UHV). The experiments will involve the use of different surface science technique including scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy.

Eligible Candidates

The successful candidate should have a strong background in physics, chemistry, nanotechnology or materials science, and be committed to perform experiments on ultra-high vacuum equipment addressing problems within the field of surface science, at the borderline between solid state physics and chemistry.

The LASUAM group at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, with a more than 20 years long trajectory, is among the world leaders with respect to fundamental surface science. The group comprises more than 20 people of different nationalities. The primary experimental platform comprises 3 Ultra-High Vacuum STM setups, 3 Helium Diffraction setups, and 1 Nanomagnetism Laboratory.

Eligibility:

International Masters Scholarship Scheme

Applications for 2010 Entry

The University has up to 15 full tuition-fee merit-based scholarships for International students commencing taught Masters programmes starting in October 2010.

These scholarships are open to applicants interested in programmes from the following Schools only.

Biosciences (two available)
Education (one available)
Geography (two available - one each for the Exeter and Cornwall campuses)
Humanities (three available)
Psychology (one available)
Sports and Health Sciences (two available)

All of these awards are aimed at International students with high academic ability (typically at least an upper second class honours or international equivalent). Applicants who require pre-sessional English will be considered but will have a lower priority for an award than those applicants who already satisfy the University’s English language requirements. Preference will be given to those who can demonstrate, through their application, the potential to progress to doctoral study at the University of Exeter.

Please note that a number of programmes are specifically excluded from these Scholarships:

Masters in Public Administration (MPA) within Humanities

Masters by Research (MA or MSc), are excluded as they offer the opportunity to pursue a one year research project without a taught element.

All Business School Masters are excluded from this Scholarship Scheme.
